 Why Join Scouts?

Well..... everyone has different reasons for joining scouts.

For starters, there are lots of activities to get involved in, such as climbing, camping, canoeing, archery, pioneering etc.

On the regular Friday nights we regularly play new games, both inside and out, as well as doing more challenging things. Recently, we have built a camera out of little more then a cardboard box; built a working radio out of a few bits of wire and a couple of basic components; lit fires (with no paper) and cooked a meal..... Have a look at our programme to see what we are doing this term.

Every term we try to have a weekend camp (see the gallery for photo's from the latest ones) and in the summer we go away for a week. Last year it was a week in Dorneywood with activities from kayaking and dragon boating to climbing and a day at a theme park!. This year, some scouts are off to Lochernhead for a fun filled ten days!. Our camps are always a mixture of traditional camping and exciting activities.

Most of all its the scouts that make it most fun - and that's what its all about!

Come along on a Friday, or contact one of the leaders. Try it - you don't know what you're mising...

 Coming Up......

Coming Up........

8th May 2011 is the annual St Georges Day Parade. Please meet at Bancroft near the bandstand for 2:20pm in FULL uniform! The parade will take place followed by a short service and the renewal of the promise. It should be finished by 3:30pm.

Also the annual AGM is on Monday 13th June at St Johns Community centre. These are the two events that we mark as compulsory during the year so please make sure you attend if possible. The AGM is at 5:55pm and should last around an hour and  a half with entertainment provided by the youngsters!

Cheers and see you there

Beavers and Cubs meet on Mondays during term time, and Scouts on Fridays. We all meet at St. Johns Community Centre, St. Johns Road, Hitchin, except for the Scouts who now meet at Church House between 7:30pm and 9:30pm. Have a look at the individual section pages to learn more.

 Summer Camp 2009

12th and 16th Hitchin joined forces for a fantastic week away at Leeswood camp site in Watford. With a Back 2 Basics Adventure theme, 17 scouts had a great week with some excellent activities. Everyone took part in Climbing, Rifle Shooting and Archery. There was a 10 mile day hike along the Grand Union Canal and back through some more rural landscape.

To cap off the week a definite highlight was the day out at Chessington World of Adventures where rides ranged from the more heart racing Dragons Fury to the slow and easily paced Professor Burp's Bubbleworks. The writer of this blog much preferred the Pirate ship, unlike one of our slightly braver member of the leadership team who would have hit me if he wasn't holding on so tight!

Even at the days spent at camp, there were important Scout activities with plenty of action. Camp ovens were built, in which Pizza and Apple Crumble was cooked. Wide games were played, campfires lit, camp gadgets built and wood piles topped up. In general the scouts did all the work themselves, cooking their own food on fires they kept going themselves.

A volleyball court was built to provide some fun and games during free time and throughout the week everyone earned a badge or more. The Adventure badge was won by all with the Outdoor badge also being earned by those that didn't already have it. Everyone added to their nights away and hikes away and a few people also completed their Expedition badge. A select few also managed to finish their Chief Scout Gold Award, the highest accolade that can be won as a Scout.

Thanks again to all the leaders and to the parents who helped to ferry equipment and food to and from the site. It was a wonderful week and thanks also to the Scouts who turned up, without you there was no week! Well done and cheers. Heres to 2010!!
